ALUNE WADE: THE STAR BASSIST WHO SETS VENUES ON FIRE

There is one bassist who has ranked high on our list of artists we have wanted to bring back here at Cosmo in recent years. Now he is returning, as part of this year’s Films from the South festival.

And he is not just coming to demonstrate why he is considered one of the most respected bassists of his generation. He is coming with a band and a sound that can transform Cosmopolite into a club in Paris, Dakar or New Orleans—in a single evening.

«J'ai pour mission de métisser les sons», he has said himself.
– My mission is to blend sounds.

Alune Wade does not really consider himself just a bassist. And although critics have described him as a magician on the bass, he is just as much a vocalist, composer, arranger, producer and bandleader. And live? He is the centre of the room.

From Paris to Dakar and New York, Alune Wade has left his distinct mark on the meeting between African music and jazz. Along the way, he has shared the stage with stars such as Marcus Miller, Bobby McFerrin, Salif Keita and Oumou Sangaré, and live he is described as a musical explosion of energy with the ability to set the entire venue on fire.

But for us, it is not just about the prestigious names. It is about the music.

The album African Fast Food has been on repeat here at the office since it was released. An album that simply blew us away, and that still feels like a concentrated expression of some of what we ourselves want our programming to represent. Because Wade cannot be placed in a single musical box. Senegalese music? Jazz? Classical? Reggae? Taxuraan? Why choose? Wade himself speaks of «musique équitable»—fair music. Music that gives him the freedom to follow his curiosity wherever it leads. In other words: No borders. No musical passport controls.

What Wade creates is, in his own words, «100 per cent global and from all over the world».

It is difficult to imagine a better description of some of what we want our stage to encompass.

That is why we have booked Alune Wade to return to Cosmopolite. And this time, we recommend that you do not come just to listen. Come to feel what happens when Dakar, Paris and New Orleans meet at Torshov.
